PASTOR’S REPORT
TO THE CONGREGATION – 2002

So then, everything depends, not on what man wants or does, but only on God\'s mercy. (Romans 9:16)

In last year\'s Pastor\'s Report, there were several questions that might lead us to think about the past and the future of our Congregation. One of these was: "What is going to happen in the future?" A year ago, the Congregation was seriously searching and asking who will replace the departing Pastor.

On the cold January day when I received your Chief Elder\'s letter of invitation, I was surprised and happy, hesitant, but I acted promptly. I believe the Lord started to prepare the future of this Congregation and for us, too, with this letter. We never know what the future holds. We do not see clearly what the next hour will bring into our life. But if we hear and listen to the Scriptures and are open to follow in the direction that God leads us, then we truly see the miracles and mysterious ways in which He works in our lives. Then we realize that there is nothing to fear in our future.

We seriously considered the contents of the above mentioned letter. In March, I had the opportunity to meet with the Pulpit Committee, and we got to know each other and to discuss the future that God may have prepared for both parties. Those two hours with the Committee will always stay in my memory because of their openness, kindness, and Christian love. They showed me their responsible concern for the best interests of the Congregation. I was very tired that day after my long trip by plane and bus from Ohio, but once here, I was revitalized by these nice people. That was the turning point, when I decided: if they like me, I will give them a positive answer to their call.

Some months later (July 29) on a hot, humid day, our family landed at JFK, and our new life was about to begin in the USA. I have many memories of those first weeks, and we will never forget the love and fellowship with which the Congregation welcomed us.

The opening question has at least one answer: the new Pastor is here. But what are the next steps? Before and since our arrival, I have struggled with these challenging problems and questions:

• Here is a 100-year-old Congregation with her own traditions and history. How can I bring new elements into its community life?
• What are the most important cornerstones on which to build a 21st century Congregation over the next several years?
• Are we open enough to listen to God\'s guidance?

Looking back on the past five months, we have had a number of successes. Church activities were restarted: Bible Study, Christian Youth Fellowship, Christmas Caroling, New Year\'s Day service. The Hungarian Heritage Group adds a new dimension to our Church activities. I have some more ideas for the coming year, but these will remain only plans without your support and participation.

During the year, it was necessary to renovate and upgrade the parsonage and the other buildings. We are grateful to the Church Council for providing us with comfortable living accommodations and for the generous gift to help us furnish our home. In addition, we also express our heartfelt thanks to all the members of the Congregation and friends who surprised us with various gifts.

The Church Council acted in an outstanding manner during the time of transition in the last year. While having no resident or installed Pastor, it competently led the Congregation and managed to resolve all of the problems that arose. Thanks to all of the Council members, especially the Officers, and last, but not least, to our Chief Elder, Mr. Kim Latkovich.

I was pleased to take part in all the activities of the different organizations of the Congregation. I tried to give advice where I could. Thank you for your input, which helps me to better serve the congregation. Without this assistance, my ministry would be poorer and weaker.

Please read the Vital Statistics carefully. I am sorry to report, we had no weddings, only one confirmant, and 17 funerals. I not only want to report these facts, but I would like to discuss and develop a plan to try to increase or, at least, stabilize our membership.

I was happy to participate at the Annual American Hungarian Reformed Ministerial Association Conference in Ligonier, PA, where I was asked to preach in Hungarian at the opening Worship Service. I also represented our Church in Lorain, OH, at their 100th Anniversary celebration. I took part in the First Presbyterian Church\'s (Perth Amboy) 200th Anniversary celebration, and it was a joy to see our Choir participate and show its talents. I was introduced to and greeted the General Assembly of the Synod when it met in Carteret. It was an honor for our Congregation to welcome the newly installed Bishop, Rt. Rev. Andor Demeter, and that he conducted his first service among us. I regularly attend the monthly meetings of the American Hungarian Reformed Ministerial Association - Eastern District.

Since my arrival, I have made several visits to members in hospitals and in their homes, but not as many as I would like to. If I could not go somewhere, I called our members or sent cards. I promise you, I will make visitations a priority this year.

Finally, I would like to thank all those who helped us come here, to settle down here, and to become familiar with all our new circumstances:

- Rev. Imre Bertalan, Dean, who oversaw my election and forthcoming service in this Congregation;
- Rev. Dr. Francis Vitez and Rev. Albert Kovacs, who served the Congregation during the transition period;
- Rev. Stefan Torok, who helped me find the right direction toward this Congregation’s life;
- Mr. Kim Latkovich, who gave me all the information I needed to know to be your good Pastor;
- Miss Priscilla Hunyady, who is our advisor, assistant in all areas that are unfamiliar to us, language consultant, friend, and sister in Christ; and
- Aniko Kocsis, my wife, and my children, who are always by my side and encourage me to be prepared for all circumstances in order to better serve the Lord.

There are many others whom I should mention. Please forgive me if I have omitted your names, but I will try to thank each of you personally.

LELKIPÁSZTORI JELENTÉS - 2002

„Nem azé aki akarja, nem is azé aki fut, hanem a könyörülö Istené.” (Róma 9,16)

Az elmúlt évi lelkipásztori jelentésben számos kérdés vetődött fel amelyek a gyülekezet multjának és jövőjének átgondolására késztetnek bennünket. Egyike ezeknek: „Mi történik a jovőben?” Egy évvel ezelőtt az egész gyülekezet előtt ott volt a nagy kérdés, ki lesz az eltávozott lelkész utoda.

Egy hideg januári napon, amikor megkaptam a főgondnok levelét, meglepődtem és örültem, gondolkodtam és gyorsan cselekedtem. Hiszem, hogy Isten készitette el a jövőt a gyülekezet és a mi számunkra. Mi soha nem tudjuk mit hoz a jövő, de ha van fülünk az Ige meghallására, nyitottak vagyunk Isten irányába, akkor látjuk igazán, hogy Ő milyen csodálatosan munkálkodik az életünkben, nincs mitől félnünk a jövőt illetően.

Az emlitett levélre válaszoltam és márciusban találkoztam a lelkészjelölő bizottság tagjaival. Számomra mindig emlékezetes marad a két, együtt eltöltött óra. Hosszú és fárasztó utazás után teljesen felvillanyozódtam a tárgyalás végére. Ekkor döntöttem el, ha meghivnak, elfogadom, eljövök a gyülekezet lelkészének.

Néhány hónappal később, egy forró nyári napon megérkeztünk és elkezdődött életünk új szakasza az Államokban. Sok emlékünk van az első hetekből is, nem fogjuk elfelejteni azt a szeretetet és kedvességet, amivel a gyülekezet fogadott minket.

A beszámoló elején emlitett kérédésre egy válasz már született, az új lelkész itt van. Mindez felvet további kérdéseket:

- A 100 éves múlttal biró gyülekezet életébe hogyan lehet újitásokat bevinni?
- Melyek azok a sarokkövek amelyre a következő néhány évben épitkezni lehet?
- Mennyire vagyunk nyitottak Isten vezetésének meghallására?

Visszatekintve az elmúlt időszakra, néhány dolog miatt elégedettség tölthet el minket. Újra meginditottuk a bibliaórákat, az ifjúsági csoportot, a karácsonyi kántálást, ismét volt újév reggelén istentisztelet. A hagyományőrző csoport pedig új szinfolt a gyülekezet életében. Az elkövetkezendő időszakra nézve van néhány új tervem. De ezek a ti támogatásotok és részvételetek nélkül csak elképzelések maradnak.

Köszönet a gyülekezet közösségének, a lelkészlakás felujitásáért és a nagylelkű ajándékért, amivel be tudtuk rendezni az új otthonunkat.

A Presbitérium áldozatos szolgálatáért is köszönetet mondunk, hogy az átmeneti időben helytálltak, megoldották a felmerülő problémákat.

Az elmult időszakban igyekeztem részt venni a gyülekezet minden csoportjának gyűlésén, tanácsot adva és tanácsokat kérve a közös munkához.

Kérem olvassák el a statisztikai adatokat, nagyon sok elgondolkoztató információt lehet megtalálni bennük. Nagyon fontosnak tartom a gyülekezet létszámának megtartását, növelését.

Szolgálati időm alatt számos eseményen vettem részt, képviseltem a gyülekezetet különböző gyűléseken. Öröm volt számunkra, hogy az Egyházkerület újonnan megválasztott püspöke Demeter Andor nálunk végezte első püspöki szolgálatát.

Igyekeztem minél több gyülekezeti tagot meglátogatni, betegeinket a kórházakban és otthonaikban felkeresni. Ha nem tudtam menni, legalább telefonon tartottuk a kapcsolatot. Igérem, hogy ebben az évben még több figyelmet forditok a látogatásokra.

Végül, köszönetet mondok mindazoknak, akik az elmúlt időszakban segitségemre voltak.
-Bertalan Imre esperes úrnak, aki nagy gondossággal és atyai szeretettel készitette elő a választásomat és a gyülekezeti szolgálatomat.
-Vitéz Ferencz és Kovács Albert lelkipásztoroknak, akik az átmeneti időszakban hűséggel szolgáltak a gyülekezetben.
-Török István lelkipásztornak, elődömnek, aki készséggel igazitott el a gyülekezet életének megismerésében,
-Kim Latkovich főgondnoknak, aki minden információt megad ahhoz, hogy beilleszkedjek a közösség életébe,
-Hunyady Piroskának akinek segitsége, tanácsai nélkül bizony elvesztünk volna a bürokrácia útvesztőiben,
-Feleségemnek Anikónak és családomnak, akik mindig mellettem állnak és bátoritanak, együtt vannak velem az Úr szolgálatában.

Sokan vannak még akiknek neveit emlitenem kellene, bocsássanak meg hogy hely hiányában nem teszem, de személyesen mindenkinek megteszem.

Köszönöm Istennek és testvéreimnek az elmúlt esztendőt és könyörögjünk az újban is az Ő áldásaiért.

Pastor’s Report
To the Congregation 2003


Psalm 16:11 “You will show me the path of life: in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.-

Dear Christian Brothers and Sisters!

The present generation of the Magyar Reformed Church of Perth Amboy is blessed and privileged because:
- you knew the former generations of the Congregation which kept this fellowship alive;
- you inherited a great gift, which gives you the possibility to establish your present congregational work and mission;
- you are the members who had the joy of celebrating the 100th Anniversary of our Congregation;
- you and your children are the ones who will make the marks on the first pages of the second one hundred years of our Congregation.

I, as the sixth installed Pastor of our Congregation, feel that I am privileged, too. I am at the end of a line which started with the Rev. Joseph Kozma and was followed by other highly respected Ministers throughout the century. Let me make just a footnote comment that all the Pastors of our Church came from Hungary or the former territories of the Country.

I came here from a congregation, which was established in 1520, just three years after the Reformation. It does not matter how old we are, or how long our history is. We have the same obligations: we have to proclaim God’s message in the present world; we have to heal the wounded; and we have to share the love, which comes to us in Christ.

These are the major themes upon which I will try to summarize the year 2003, which is already behind us.

1. Praise the Lord that we had time to preach, to celebrate the various worship services and funeral services, to teach in the Sunday School, and to prepare our young friends for confirmation. We had special events like the World Day of Prayer, the Church Women United Conference, the Pastor’s Installation, our 100th Anniversary Celebration, and the Veterans’ Plaque Dedication. We shared in Holy Communion each month, and I brought the holy elements to our sick and shut-in members’ homes, too. You can read the Sunday attendance in our bulletins; I hope these numbers make us more concerned about our personal mission toward family members and friends who do not come to church often. The average is 48 at the English Service and 15 at the Hungarian, which is a growing number.

2.God gave us enough spiritual power to heal the wounded and encourage the depressed ones. There is a great number of elderly people in our Congregation; they especially needed the visits and phone calls throughout the year. I focused on meeting with the family members of those who lost their loved ones.I was pleased when our members came to me and asked for my spiritual advice to solve their personal problems. I made visitations to those who were in hospitals and nursing homes to bring them the Good News and to express the get-well wishes of the Congregation. It was also important to minister to those Hungarian-speaking friends who are in this country to work, but they feel lonely because they lack the English language skills.

It is good to know that we are not alone; there are other Christians who feel the same as we do. It was nice to have special guests during the past year: Bishop Andor Demeter, who officiated at the Installation Service; the members of the Bishop’s Council who also participated in this event; the Rev. Attila Kocsis, Sr.; Bishop Dr. István Szabó /Budapest/; Dr. Gábor Horváth, Consul General, and his family /New York/; the Rev. Robert Marcsinák, as guest minister /Debrecen/; Bishop Alexander Forró; István Szabó, former Chief Elder of the HRCA; Dean Barnabas Rőczey; Anthony Beke, Chief Elder of the HRCA; Bishop Louis Medgyesi from the Calvin Synod; Dr. Zoltán Abádi Nagy, Vice-Rector of the University of Debrecen; Hon. Joseph Vas, Mayor of Perth Amboy; the Rev. Zoltán Ormoshegyi, Student Minister /Princeton - Hajdúszoboszló, Hungary/; and the Rev. Attila Veres Kovács /Lorain, OH/.

We hosted meetings of the American Hungarian Reformed Ministerial Association - Eastern Division and the Perth Amboy Pastors Association.

We also welcomed the members of the Linden Church after they merged with us. That Congregation had a 50-year history, and now we are happy to welcome and include them in the Perth Amboy church family.

It was also joyful that we could participate at various celebrations at our sister churches, such as the 110th Anniversary in South Norwalk /CT/, the 100th Anniversary of Woodbridge-Carteret, and the 90th Anniversary of Roebling. Our elders participated in the Presbyters’Conference, and I spent two days at the Ministerial Association Conference in Ligonier.

In July, during our travels in Hungary, our sister Church in Hajdúnánás hosted us with love and goodwill. We are looking forward to establishing a closer and more active relationship with their groups and organizations. We also visited my former church in Mezőtúr, where we enjoyed their hospitality. The Congregation owns a school for mentally and physically disabled children, where they educate 53 children, ages 6-18. We presented $1,600, which was the gift of the area churches; our part was $500.

5. felt that my ministry and I were accepted when I was elected as the President of the American Hungarian Reformed Ministerial Association - Eastern Division. I was also elected as the Vice-President of the Perth Amboy Pastors Association. These two activities give me more work, but the trust placed in me gives me enough power to fulfill these duties.

6.I did it before, but when we summarize the year 2003, I would like to give thanks to everyone who helped my ministry, supported our personal and familial life. It was a great moment for our family when our oldest son and my mother visited in February. She was so happy to share her baking expertise with the women of the Church. It was a most surprising gift when my father arrived to be with us at my installation. I will never forget this great gift of the Congregation! Without your empathy, love, help, and, above all of these, your prayers, we would not be able to do our work. God bless you for everything.

It is very important to recognize who your co-workers are, those who you work with as a team.The Church Council performed an outstanding service throughout the year of our Jubilee. The Officers and the Chairpersons of the different committees organized their work efficiently and shared their ideas with the Council in order to make the past year a success.

It was a distressing phone call when I heard the news that our Chief Elder, Mr. Kim Latkovich, was in the hospital. Thanks be to God that he is better now! We are all with him and his family, and he should know that a lot of people are praying for him and his healing. Although it was hard to understand, but because of the circumstances, we accept his resignation
as Chief Elder. He was an exemplary leader of our congregation during his tenure as Chief Elder. We hope that this will only be a brief break, and that we will see him as the leader of our Congregation again some time in the near future.

Thanks to the Church Secretaries, Mrs. Arlene Sabo and Miss Priscilla Hunyady, who were always ready to prepare the Sunday Bulletins, the Newsletters, and all the official letters.

We also honor Mrs. Lillian Banyacski, our Organist, who continues to faithfully serve our congregation by leading our singing and conducting the Choir.

My report and all the other reports in this Yearbook, on one hand, are summaries of the past year, but, on the other hand, they are mirrors, too. What did we do in the past and what should we learn from it for the future? Did we study last year’s lessons and are we eligible to step into the next class? May God help us to do so!

Kedves Testvéreim!

A Perth Amboy-i Magyar Református Gyülekezet mai nemzedéke különleges és megáldott állapotban van, mert:
- ismerhettétek az előző nemzedékeket, amelyek fenntartották a gyülekezetet,
- örökségül kaptatok egy nagy ajándékot, amely lehetővé tette a gyülekezet mai szolgálatát és munkáját,
- ti vagytok azok, akiknek megadatott, hogy örvendezhessenek a 100. évforduló alkalmából,
- ti és gyermekeitek azok, akik a gyülekezet életének második száz esztendeje fejezetének első lapjait irhatjátok.

Megtisztelve érzem magam a gyülekezet hatodik beiktatott lelkipásztoraként. Annak a sornak állok most a végén, amely Nt. Kozma Józseffel kezdődött és folytatódott azokkal a nagytekintélyű lelkipásztorokkal, akik az elmúlt száz évben szolgáltak. Egy rövid lábjegyzetben hadd emlitsem meg, hogy gyülekezetünk minden eddigi lelkésze Magyarországról vagy a történelmi Magyarország területéről érkezett ide.

Én olyan gyülekezetből jöttem el, amelyiket néhány évvel a Reformáció után alapitottak. Nem számit, hogy milyen hosszú múltra tekinthetünk vissza, hány évesek vagyunk, ugyanaz a kötelességünk: hirdetnünk kell az Isten Igéjét abban a korban amelyben élünk, gyógyitani a megsebzetteket, olyan szeretettel odafordulni másokhoz, hogy az Krisztushoz vezesse őket.

Ezek azok a fő szempontok, amelyek alapján megpróbálom összefoglalni a mögöttünk lévő 2003. esztendőt.

Hála legyen Istennek, hogy adatott idő az igehirdetésre, megtarthattuk a különböző istentiszteleti alkalmainkat, temetési szolgálatainkat, tanithattunk a Vasárnapi Iskolában és felkészithettük ifjú testvéreinket a konfirmációi bizonyságtételre. Különleges alkalmaink voltak, úgy mint a Női Világimanap megtartása, itt tartotta éves Konferenciáját a Magyar Református Nőszövetség, szép alkalom volt a lelkipásztori beiktatás, a 100. Évforduló megünneplése valamint a Veteránok Emléktáblájának felavatása.
Minden hónapban kiszolgáltattuk az Úri szent vacsora jegyeit és igyekeztem mindenkinek elvinni az urvacsorát, aki már nem tud eljönni a közösségbe.
Az istentiszteleteken résztvevők létszámát hétről-hétre figyelemmel kisérhetitek, remélem ezek a számok elgondolkoztatnak atekintetben, hogy milyen szolgálatunk van családunkban és baráti körünkben a hivogatások tekintetében. Az angol nyelvű istentisztelet látogatottságának átlaga 48, a magyaré 15, ami jelentős emelkedést mutat.


Isten adott számunkra elegendő lelki erőt, hogy gyógyitó szóval segitsük a bajba jutottakat és bátoritsuk az elkeseredteket. Gyülekezetünkben nagy számban vannak idősek, számunkra igen sokat jelent a látogatás és a telefonkapcsolat. Fontosnak tartottam, hogy a gyászoló családok tagjaival találkozzak. A bizalom jelének érzem, amikor gyülekezetünk tagjai jönnek hozzám és tanácsot kérnek életük adódó problémáinak megoldásához. Igyekeztem minden
betegünket meglátogatni a kórházakban, idősek otthonában, elvive számukra az Örömhirt és a gyülekezet tagjainak jókivánságait.
Szintén fontosnak tartottam azoknak a jobbára csak magyarul beszélő testvéreinknek a gondozását, akik dolgozni vannak ebben az országban, hogy ne érezzék magukat elveszettnek a nyelvtudás és baráti kapcsolatok hiányában.

Jó volt érezni és tudni, hogy nem vagyunk egyedül, sokan vannak keresztyén testvéreink, akik hozzánk hasonlóan éreznek. Öröm volt számunkra, hogy jeles vendégeket üdvözölhettünk az év során: Ft. Demeter Andor Püspök urat, aki a beiktatás alkalmából szolgált közöttünk, a Püspöki Tanács tagjait, aki szintén részt vettek e jeles alkalmon, id. Kocsis Attila ny. lelkészt, Ft. Dr. Szabó István Dunamelléki Püspököt, Dr. Horváth Gábor Főkonzult és családját New Yorkból, Nt. Marcsinák Róbert lelkészt aki nyári szabadságom idején végezte a szolgálatokat, Ft. Forró Sándor ny. Püspököt, Szabó István volt Főgondnokot, Nt. Rőczey Barnabás Esperest, Beke Antal Főgondnokot, Ft. Medgyesi Lajos Püspököt, Prof. Dr. Abádi-Nagy Zoltán Pro-Rektort Debrecenből, Joseph Vas-t városunk Polgármesterét, Nt. Ormóshegyi Zoltán Princeton-i ösztöndijas diákot és Nt. Veres Kovács Attila lelkészt Lorain/OH/.
Ugyancsak nálunk tartotta gyűlését az Amerikai Magyar Református Lelkészegyesület Keleti csoportja és a Perth Amboy-i Lelkészkör.
Szeretettel köszöntöttük a Linden-i gyülekezet tagjait, akik úgy döntöttek, hogy a gyülekezet megszünése után hozzánk kivánnak tartozni. 50 évet szolgált ez a gyülekezet és most testvérekként fogadtuk be őket a mi közösségünkbe.

Különleges öröm volt együtt lenni azokkal a gyülekezetekkel, amelyek szintén ünnepeltek, a 110 éves South Norwalk /CT/, a 100 éves Woodbridge-Carteret és a 90 éves Roebling. Presbitereink részt vettek a Ligonier-i Presbiteri Konferencián, ahol én is két napot töltöttem a Lelkészi Konferencián.
Júliusban, magyarországi csoportos kirándulásunk során meglátogattuk Hajdúnánás-i testvérgyülekezetünket, ahol nagy szeretettel és barátsággal fogadtak minket. Várakozással tekintünk a két gyülekezet különböző csoportjainak további együttműködése felé. Korábbi gyülekezetemben, Mezőtúron is látogatást tettünk, ahol szintén élvezhettük a magyaros vendégszeretetet. A gyülekezet értelmi és testi fogyatékos gyermekek számára tart fenn iskolát, ahol jelenleg 53 diák tanul 6-18 éves korig. 1.600 dollár adományt vittünk az épület felújitásához, amely az itteni gyülekezetek adománya volt, a mi részünk ebből 500 dollár volt.

Úgy érzem, hogy szolgákatomat és személyemet elfogadták akkor, amikor megválaszottak az Amerikai Magyar Református Lelkészegyesület Keleti Csoportja elnökévé, valamint a Perth Amboy-i Lelkészi Kör alelnökévé. Ez a két megbizatás több feladatot ró rám, de a bizalom ad elég erőt a munkák elvégzéséhez.

Ezt már korábban megtettem, de most, amikor összegezzük az elmúl évet, újra köszönetet mondok mindazoknak, akik segitették lelkészi szolgálatomat, támogatták személyes és családi életemet. Örömteli alkalma volt családi életünknek, amikor legidősebb fiunk és édesanyám februárban meglátogattak bennünket. Édesanyám készséggel osztotta meg sütési tudományát a gyülekezet asszonyaival. Életem egyik legnagyobb meglepetése volt, amikor beiktatásomra megérkezett édesapám is. Soha nem fogom elfelejteni a gyülekezet nagylelkű ajándékát! Szeretetetek, segitségetek, és mindezek felett imádságaitok nélkül nem lettem volna képes elvégezni mindazt, ami feladatul adatott.
Isten áldjon meg benneteket mindezekért.

Nagyon fontos az is, hogy kikkel dolgozik együtt az ember, kikkel alkot egy csapatot. A Presbitérium a Jubileum évében is végtelen szorgalommal dolgozott. A Tisztviselők és a különböző Bizottságok vezetői alaposan megszervezték a munkát, és alkalmas javaslatokkal
segitették elő a Presbitérium döntéseit, hogy ez az esztendő is eredményes lehessen.
A nyár folyamán ijesztő volt az a telefonhir, hogy Főgondnokunk Kim Latkovich kórházba került. Hála legyen Istennek mostmár jobban van. Mindannyian vele és családjával éreztünk és bizonyára tudja, hogy milyen sokan imádkoznak gyógyulásáért. Nehéz volt elfogadni, de a körülmények hatására megértjük azon elhatározását, hogy lemond a Főgondnokságról. Gyülekezetünk példamutató vezetője volt megbizatása idején. Reméljük, hogy ez csak egy kis szünet lesz és a közeli jövőben újra képes lesz ellátni vezetői feladatait.
Illesse köszönet a titkárnőket, Arlene Sabo és Hunyady Piroska testvéreinket, aki mindig készek voltak a vasárnapi istentiszteleti rendtartások, a Hirlevelek és a hivatalos levelek időbeni elkészitésére.
Tisztesség adassék Lillian Banyacski orgonistánknak és kórusvezetőnknek, aki hűséggel szolgálja a gyülekezetet több mint 50 éve.

Az én beszámolóm és a többi, amelyik az Évkönyvben található, egyrészt összefoglalója az elmúlt évnek, másrészt tükröt tart elénk. Mit cselekedtünk, mit tanulhatunk ezekből a jövőre nézve? Jól megtanultuk a múlt év tananyagát és átléphetünk a következő osztályba? Isten segitsen minket, hogy igy lehessen!

Chief Elder’s Message
2003


Greetings and Happy New Year from our family to all of you and yours. As I received the message to submit my Chief Elder’s report, I had to stop and think, didn’t I just do that? Where exactly does the year go - so fleeting, before it is time to start anew.
Forgive me for not launching into the prior year’s statistics, as I have in the past, but I feel that is adequately covered by both Rev. Kocsis and Mr. Andrew Lovasz in their respective articles in this Yearbook. Instead, I would like to relate some of the more memorable events of 2003, starting with it being the second year of our congregation being under the capable leadership of our “new- minister and his family. I don’t know if it is just me, but it seems like they have been here a lot longer - they really fit right in.
Generally speaking, whenever there is a change in leadership, there is usually a "rocky" period of transition, mostly due to the fact that we as parishioners become comfortable when everything is running smoothly and do not take kindly to change. However, putting aside a few minor complaints from the members, I feel, all in all, the Kocsis Reverend(s) and their wonderful family have exceeded our expectations. Rev. Attila’s sermons have been very enlightening, as he delivers them with both spiritual and intellectual reference by mixing the Scriptures with some “storytelling’’ and occasionally relating to personal experiences. It also appears that he has broadened the Hungarian services as well, as they now number 13 to 18 in attendance, up from the prior 3 to 5 members.
Secondly, in 2003 we enjoyed the mega event of celebrating our 100-year Anniversary and its subsequent ceremony. Congratulations to each of you for your faithfulness to our Church in securing its endurance. But please remember it is you and your children who are the future of this historic Church and only through your commitment and attendance will we embark on the next 100 years. Our average Sunday attendance is 45 to 50 at the English Service, which is one-third of the members registered or one-third of the amount in Church on Christmas and Easter.
Next I would like to mention the monumental event of Rev. Kocsis’ first ever Confirmation service entirely in English, at which he stated, “I don’t know who was more nervous, the children or me?- But everything went along just fine.
In conjunction with our 100th Anniversary celebration, the Council approved renovation work at the Church Center, including total repainting of the auditorium with ceiling repairs, drapery renovations, and a wonderful bright new appearance, among numerous other building and grounds upkeep projects.
Not all the news in 2003 was good in nature, for last year saw the closing of our sister church in Linden. But on the bright side, the Linden congregation decided to join our church since they were supported at their very beginnings by the Rt. Rev. Charles Vincze and the Perth Amboy congregation. We created a new position on the Church Council for a representative from Linden. So join me in welcoming the members of the Linden congregation, along with Mrs. Priscilla Hunyady, to our Congregation and Church Family. (Not that she is a newcomer, but now she is official.)
The next bit of bad news came from me personally, when on July 9, 2003, I was suddenly and without advance warning struck down by a serious illness for which I am still being treated. Upon being admitted to Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy Division,I was informed of severe high blood pressure and of the need for me to have an extended stay
there. I left the hospital a few weeks later, and, to this day, I cannot thank enough, all of the members of this great Church who sent constant cards, letters, flowers, and, best of all, prayers. I was deeply humbled by the flood of concern. However, as this mysterious illness continues to plague me with an onslaught of blurry vision, dizziness, and concentration and memory problems, it is with deepest regrets and total sadness that I must inform the Congregation that I cannot continue as your Chief Elder in 2004. But, if I am able, I will go on helping the Pastor and the Council with whatever the needs of the Church may be.
Being the bearer of some good news and some bad news, I would like to leave you with a thought to reflect upon:
In Ecclesiastes 2:22, it is written:
“So I perceived that nothing is better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for that is his heritage. For who can bring him to see what will happen after he is gone?-
As a builder leaves behind a structure as his legacy and a mason can display a concrete sculpture, so too can we as a Congregation of faithful descendants of those who toiled to build our structure (our 100-year-old House of Worship) as a monument to their trust, faith, belief, and future! It is, therefore, apparent that it is now our legacy to continue to mold this sculpture and ensure its future for our children and, hopefully, theirs.

Pastor\'s Report 2004

“Those who are completely honest will be allowed to serve me.- (Psalm 101:6)

We celebrated our 100th Anniversary in 2003, and our guiding Bible passage came from Psalm 100. Now at the beginning of the new century of the Congregation, we start with this verse from Psalm 101. It is not just a symbolic usage of it, but it is a true statement. Only those are allowed to serve God who always listen to His message. Our wish is to become faithful servants and God’s children who follow His path.

The year 2004 was a quiet and peaceful period in the life of our Congregation. We began our second century. One of the best pieces of news was that our Sunday School has a new class with 9 children, ages 3 to 6. This is a most exciting sign of the future. Also, we have 7 confirmants in the Senior Confirmation Class, and 4 in the Junior Class.

This year’s confirmation was different from previous ones. We celebrated it together with the Woodbridge Hungarian Reformed Church because we had one girl from there confirm with our confirmants. It seems to me that this is one example of the type of cooperation we can have between our congregations in the future.

When we pray for the future, we pay tribute to the past. It was a heart-moving event last year when we dedicated the Memorial Plaque of our veterans. This year, together with HRFA Branch #80, we gave Certificates of Appreciation to those veterans who served in World War II and who, by the grace of God, are still among us.

We had our regular activities, meetings, auctions, sales, and programs. Many of our members were involved in these events, and we are happy to host sisters and brothers from other churches and denominations. We had three music concerts -- a Gospel band called “Faith Factor-, the “Üsztürü- folk band from Marosvásárhely (Romania) and in Advent Veronika Kincses opera singer with Miklos Teleki organist from Hungary. Our Missions Committee hosted a “High Tea Party,- which gave the ladies an opportunity for a great time together.

The Congregation was involved in different projects during the year, such as, the Food Pantry, Clothe-A-Child, and Operation Christmas Child. We supported the local Salvation Army Shelter, and made donations to the “Reménység (Hope) Handicapped Children’s School- in Mezőtur (Hungary) and the Lorántffy High School in Nagyvárad (Romania), and to the victims of the flood in the Dominican Republic.

We are always happy when guests come to visit us. We hosted the annual meeting of the Eastern Classis and a Ministerial Association meeting. We also had several distinguished persons worship with us: Rt. Rev. Andor Demeter, Bishop, Phoenix, AZ; the Rev. István Derencsényi, Dean, and the Rev. Zsigmond Vad from Debrecen (Hungary);
The Rev. Imre Pótor Vásárosnamény (Hungary); the Rev. Zoltán Asztalos and his wife, Hajdúszoboszló (Hungary); the Rev. Mihály Végh, Budapest, who is a student in Princeton during the 2004-05 academic year.
We were invited and we participated the various celebrations of our sister churches such as the 100th Anniversary in Bethlehem, Pa and Wharton, 90th St. Michaels Hungarian Greek Catholics of Perth Amboy, 75th John Calvin Hungarian Reformed Church of Perth Amboy.
Since we had joy and great memories of the past we had painful days when we heard the news about our deceased sister Mrs. Margaret Abraham and Rt. Rev. Ferenc Vitez. May God bless their deeds among us and give His peace in the hearts of the sorrowing families.

The leadership of our Church Council has changed. After nine years of faithful service, Kim Latkovich resigned from his position as Chief Elder due to ill health. The Congregation elected Ernest Marczi as the new Chief Elder. Special thanks to Mr. Latkovich and we wish him improved health. Other new officers elected were: Vice Presidents Mark Banyacski and Thomas Rhodes, and Secretary of the Council Laura Dinicola. Elizabeth Deak and Steve Blaho are the new members on the Council. May God bless those who have served faithfully and those who start their service.

The vital statistics of our congregation are one of the summaries of our work and ministry. You can find all of them on one page in this Yearbook. Our membership is almost constants. It is our duty to analyze what are the reasons that we have less attendance on Sundays. I think about how to refresh our congregational life but I also wait for your contributions, ideas, plans how to go further, what are the ways to renew our fellowship.
Thanks for everyone, but especially to the chairpersons of the different organizations who worked hard throughout the year. All the members of the new leadership of the Council also made their contributions and were involved to start and finish our plans.

Last but not least! It was a great moment when in September our congregation received the Certificate of Appreciation from the Republic of Hungary for her outstanding service among the Hungarians who live in the United States. Dr. Gabor Horvath the Consul General of Hungary presented this award to us with his best wishes. It is an official recognition of our past and present work, steadfast and faithfulness.

In conclusion, our wish is to be among those who serve Him with their full heart, spirit, and mind. We gave thanks to the Lord for the past year, and we seek His blessings for the coming future in the year 2005 too.

“Akik hűségesek hozzám, szolgálhatnak nekem.- Zsoltárok 101,6
2003-ban ünnepeltük gyülekezetünk fenállásának 100. évfordulóját és akkor a 100. zsoltárból vettük a hálaadó igét. Most a második század kezdetén a 101. zsoltár a vezérfonalunk. Ez nemcsak szimbólikus dolog, hanem határozott állásfoglalás is. Csak azok szolgálhatják az Urat, akik mindig figyelmesek a szavára. A mi reménységünk az, hogy továbbra is hűséges szolgák maradjunk és kövessük az Úr útját.

Az elmúlt esztendő viszonylag csendes volt,. Talán a legnagyszerűbb az volt, hogy a Vasárnapi Iskolánkban újra beindult az óvodás osztály, 9 gyermekkel. Reménytkeltő jel ez a jövőre nézve. Szintén örömmel tölt el minket, hogy a konfirmációs osztályokban szép számmal vannak ifjak, 9 illetve 4.
Ebben az évben a konfirmáció kicsit más volt a megszokottól. Együtt ünnepeltünk a woodbridgei gyülekezettel mivel onnan is volt egy konfirmandusunk. Azt gondolom ez is egy jele a jövőbeli együttműködésnek ami létrejöhet az amerikai magyar gyülekezetek között.

Miközben imádságban hordozzuk a jövőt, tisztelettel emlékszünk a múltra is. Szivet melengető eseményre került sor tavaly, amikor felavattuk a Veteránok Emléktábláját. Ebben az évben a Református Egyesület 80. osztályával együttműködve Elismerő Oklevelet adtunk át a még közöttünk élő II. Világháborús veteránok számára..
Az év folymán megtartottuk istentiszteleteinket, gyűléseinket, vásárainkat és egyéb, tervbe vett programjainkat. Sokan fáradoztak ezek sikeréért és örömmel vettük ha más gyülekezetekből jövőket is vendégül láthattünk. Három zenei koncertünk volt: a “faith Factor- evengéliumi zenekar, az “Üsztürü- népzenei együttes Erdélyből, valamint az adventi időszakban Kincses Veronika operaénekes és Teleki Miklós orgonaművész Magyarországról. A Missziói Bizottság szervezte “Teadélután- kellemes időtöltést kinált a résztvevő hölgyeknek.
Az elmúlt évben is számos programot és akciót támogattunk, nevezetesen: élelmiszer gyűjtést, gyermekek számára ruhák gyűjtését valamint karácsonyi ajándékozást. Rendszeresen támogatjuk az Üdvhadsereg menhelyét, elküldtük adományainkat a mezőtúri Reménység Iskola diákjainak, és a nagyváradi Lorántffy Gimnázium épületének felújitására valamint a dominikai árviz áldozatainak megsegitésére.

Mindig örülünk annak ha vendégek látogatnak meg bennünket. Helyet adtunk a Keleti Egyházmegye évi közgyűlésének és a Lelkészegyesület találkozóinak. Neves vendégek érkeztek hozzánk és szolgáltak közöttünk: Demeter Andor püspök úr Phoenix, AZ-ból, Derencsényi István esperes úr és Vad Zsigmond lelkipásztor Debrecenből, Dr. Pótor Imre lelkipásztor Vásárosnaményból, Asztalos Zoltán és felesége Hajdúszoboszlóról valamint Végh Mihály Budapestről aki Princetonban tanul ebben az évben.
Miközben örvendeztünk és számba vettük a múlt emlékeit, szomorú napjaink is voltak amikor eljutott hozzánk a hir, Ábrahám Margit és Dr. Vitéz Ferenc püspök úr elhunytak. Urunk adjon vigasztalást a gyászoló családoknak és tegye emléküket áldottá.

A választások és lemondasok következtében a Presbitérium vezetősége is megváltozott. Kim Latkovich, betegsége miatt kényszerült lemondani főgondnoki tisztéről. A gyülekezet Ernest Marczit választotta meg új főgondnokká. Illesse külön köszönet a leköszönő főgondnokot és kivánjuk, mihamarabb nyerje vissza egészségét.
Más tisztségviselők: Mark Banyacski és Thomas Rhodes gondnok-helyettesek, Laura Dinicola presbiteri jegyző. Elizabeth Deak és Steve Blaho pedig újonnan választott presbiterek. Isten áldja meg mindazokat akik hűségesen szolgálták és szolgálják Őt.
Az évi statisztikai jelentés, ami egyfajta összegzése a munkánknak, megtalálható az évkönyvben. A létszámunk szinte változatlan. Feladatunk azonban, hogy elemezzük az okokat miért csökken a vasárnapi istentiszteletek látogatottsága. Nekem is van néhány tervem, hogyan elevenithetnénk meg a gyülekezet életét, de szivesen fogadom a tagok javaslatait, elképzeléseit, hogyan tovább, melyek a kibontakozás útjai.

Hálásan köszönöm mindenki szolgálatát, de külön köszönet a csoportok és szervezetek vezetőinek, akik fáradhatatlanul dolgoztak az év folyamán. Mindenki sokat munkálkodott, azonban Ernest Marczi, Andrew Lovasz, Lillian Banyacski, Arlene Sabo és Hunyady Piroska fogadják elismerésünket a végzett munkáért.

Végül, de nem utolsósorban, ünnepélyes pillanat volt, amikor szeptemberben Dr. Horváth Gábor Főkonzul úr a gyülekezetnek átadta a Határon Túli Magyarok Hivatalának Elismerő Oklevelét. Megköszönte a gyülekezet eddig végzett munkáját, kifejezte jókivánságait és további eredményes szolgálatokat kivánt.
Ez a kitüntető Oklevél a Magyar Köztársaság hivatalos elismerése gyülekezetünk múltját, jelenét, hűségét és kitartását illetően.
Végezetül, kivánságunk, hogy azok között legyünk akik az Urat szolgálják, teljes szivvel, lélekkel és elmével. Hálát adunk az Urnak a múlt évért, és kérjük áldásait az előttünk lévő uj esztendőre is.

Pastor’s Report 2005

“Write down for the coming generation what the Lord has done, so that people not yet born will praise Him.- (Psalm 102:18)

We, by grace and mercy of our Heavenly Father, passed the 102nd year of our church. At the beginning of the new century of the Congregation, I cited Psalm 101 as guidance for us. It was not just a symbolic usage of it, but it was a true confession, too. At the end of the year 2005, I again opened up the Book of Psalms. The 102nd Psalm gave me timeless advice: the ultimate task is to pass our experiences on to the next generations. This is the only way our children and grandchildren will seek God’s presence. Did we tell them to do this? What did we do to present to them “what the Lord has done- for us?

Did we build and maintain our buildings and possessions that we inherited from our forefathers? Yes, we were not lazy servants of the Lord. The biggest project was the complete renewal of the Church Center’s kitchen. It took time and money, but those who work in it are satisfied with the new lighting, the new center island, and the repainted cabinets. Another necessary project was the replacement of the air conditioning unit in the Center. We tried to keep all of our buildings and properties, including the cemetery, in good condition. Due to low usage, we sold our bus. The bus, however, remains in our garage because the Company, which purchased it, rents the garage. These were the outer projects, the more visible ones.

Did we fulfill our mission duties? Yes, we tried. The Sunday School has a nursery class with five children, ages 3 to 6. This is a small promising sign of the future. But, there was no Vacation Bible School, and we do not have a Junior Confirmation Class this year!

This year’s confirmation was outstanding according to the number of the confirmants -- seven. We celebrated their commitments on Ascension Thursday, and are glad that they have remained together as a Youth Group to continue their Christian life. We were happy to help two girls to participate in the summer Hungarian Reformed Youth Camp in Pennsylvania.

We had our regular activities, meetings, auctions, sales, and programs. Many of our members were involved in these events, and we are happy to host sisters and brothers from other churches and denominations.

What we really need to do is to strengthen our outreach, more visits and calls to bring our brothers and sisters to the services. We have more and more elderly people in our congregation, sooner or later they will be not be able to drive, and they will depend on our help. So, we have to organize a car pool system to help and keep our services “crowded.- Until a carpool system is established, I encourage everyone to offer rides to fellow members who are in need, and this will be another type of contribution you can make to keep our church alive. There were 58 worship services and the average weekly worship service attendance was: English - 59, Hungarian - 14, and Sunday School - 9. (See the attendance chart.) Is this good, moderate, or poor - you decide for yourself!

We started a new activity, the Hungarian Class for those who want to learn or practice our ancestors\' language. We do not have many students, but those who attend the classes work very hard, and they really want to make progress.

The Congregation was involved in different projects during the year, such as, the Food Pantry, and Operation Christmas Child, and collecting clothes for the poor of Appalachia. We supported the local Salvation Army Shelter and made donations to the Asian tsunami victims and to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. It was a great moment when the Perth Amboy High School Choir sang in our church, and we were able to contribute towards their trip to a National Choir Festival at Myrtle Beach, NC.
We also sent our donations to the Bethlen Home in Ligonier, PA, on the occasion of the dedication of the new building as a small token of our appreciation for their ministry.

In October, we presented a letter of Lajos Kossuth that was found in the Pastor’s office to the Debrecen College, where they have the largest collection of his relics. This priceless letter was exhibited in the main hall as the most valuable item of 2005.

I believe we were good stewards of our Lord. One sign of this is the amount of your donations and offerings, the total income was $174,000, of which $18,500 was from the sale of the bus and $8,300 was from the Women’s Guild toward the kitchen.
This is the moment when, on behalf of the Church leadership, we thank all of you for your continuous support.

Did we welcome our friends as brothers and sisters in Christ? Yes, we are always happy when guests come to visit us. We hosted meetings of the Hungarian Reformed Ministerial Association. We also had several distinguished persons worship with us: the Rev. Imre Bertalan, the Director of the Bethlen Home, Ligonier; the Revs. Daniel Püski and Boglárka Lente from Debrecen, who are students in Princeton during the 2005-06 academic year; Prof. Dr. August Molnar New Brunswick; Gabor Turi, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, and Dr. Botond G. Szabo, Director of the Collections of the Reformed College Debrecen (Hungary).

We now have a year long relationship with the Hanwoori Korean Church. They use our Center’s lower level to worship and for Christian education. It is a young congregation, but full of vitality and dedication. It was a great sign of our brotherhood, when we celebrated the Asian New Year together, and they accepted our invitation to join us at our Annual Picnic. We hope this cooperation will be a successful one for both parties.

We were invited to and participated in the various celebrations of our sister churches, such as the 90th Anniversaries in New Brunswick and Manville, the 110th at the Hungarian Reformed Church of Passaic, and the rededication service of the Calvin Hall of the Hungarian Reformed Church of Fairfield, Conn. It was an uplifting event when we celebrated together the dedication of the new building of the Bethlen Home, Ligonier, PA

Although we had joy and great memories of the past, we also had painful days as when we heard the news about our deceased sister, the Rev. Ollie Benko Hall. May God bless her deeds among us and give His peace to the hearts of the sorrowing families.

Thanks to everyone, but especially to the chairpersons of the different organizations who worked hard throughout the year. All the members of the leadership of the Council made their contributions and were involved from the start to finish all of our plans. In conclusion, I might say, the year 2005 was a year when we were able to serve, help, contribute, greet, and cooperate. We give thanks to the Lord for all these, and we seek His blessings for the coming future in the year 2006, too.

“Meg kell irni a jövő nemzedéknek, hogy dicsérje az Urat.- Zsoltárok 102,19
Mennyei Atyánk kegyelméből és áldásával eltelt gyülekezetünk életének 102. esztendeje. Tavaly, a második száz év kezdetén a 101. zsoltárból vettem az Igét, amely vezérfonalunk volt az esztendő folyamán. Ez nemcsak szimbólikus dolog volt, hanem határozott állásfoglalás is. 2005 végén, ismét a Zsoltárok Könyvét nyitottam fel. A 102. zsoltár verse adja meg az örökérvényű tanácsot: "Meg kell irni a jövő nemzedéknek, hogy dicsérje az Urat-, vagyis átadni nekik mindazt a tapasztalatot, amit mi szereztünk. Ez az útja és módja annak, hogy a következő nemzedék keresse az Urat. Eleget tettünk ennek az igei felszólitásnak? Mit tettünk annak érdekében, hogy láttassuk velük, "mit tett az Ur velünk-?

Épitettük, javitottuk, karbantartottuk mindazokat az épületeket, amiket atyáinktól örököltünk? Úgy vélem, nem voltunk rest szolgák. A legnagyobb feladat és munka a gyülekezeti központ konyhájának felújitása volt. Régóta készültünk rá, most végre befejeződött. A konyhát használók örömmel fogadták a nagyobb fényt, az új nagy munkaasztalt és a szépen festett bútorokat. A központ másik nagy munkája volt a légkondicionáló berendezés cseréje.

Az év során igyekeztünk mindent a jó gazda gondosságával kezelni, karbantartani, nemcsak épületeinket, hanem a temetőt is. A nagy buszunkat a tavalyi döntés értelmében eladtuk, sajnos nem tudtuk eléggé kihasználni. A cég amelyik megvásárolta, kibérelte a garázsunkat, itt tartja, és ha nekünk bármikor szükségünk van rá, kedvezményesen rendelkezésre bocsájtja.

Röviden összefoglalva ezek voltak a külső, látható épitkezések az elmúlt évben.

Eleget tettünk missziói kötelezettségeinknek? Igen, megpróbáltuk. Vasárnapi Iskolánkban újra beindult az óvodás osztály, 5 gyermekkel. Reménytkeltő jel ez a jövőre nézve. Sajnálattal kell viszont beszámolni, hogy nem volt Nyári Bibliaiskolánk és jelentkezők hiján nincs előkészitő konfirmációs osztály sem. Ebben az évben a konfirmáció kicsit más volt a megszokottól, már ami a számokat illeti. 7 konfirmandusunkkal Áldozócsütörtökön együtt ünnepeltük fogadalomtételüket. Külön öröm az, hogy ez a csoport együtt maradt és ifjusági csoportként igyekszik a keresztyén élet még teljesebb megismerésére. Jó jel volt az is, hogy az elmült évben két lány vett részt az országos református nyári ifjisági táborban.

Az év folymán megtartottuk istentiszteleteinket, gyűléseinket, vásárainkat és egyéb, tervbe vett programjainkat. Sokan fáradoztak ezek sikeréért és örömmel vettük ha más gyülekezetekből jövőket is vendégül láthattunk.

Amire igazán nagy szükség van, hogy erősitsük a belmissziói munkánkat, többet látogassunk, hivjuk-hozzuk testvéreinket az istentiszteletekre. Egyre több idős testvérünk van, akik már nem tudnak vezetni, igy rászorulnak mások segitségére. Hamarosan meg kell szervezni ezen atyafiak utaztatását, hogy istentiszteleteink ne néptelenedjenek el. Az átlagos istentiszteleti látogatottság 2005-ben a következő volt: angol-59, magyar 14, vasárnapi iskola-9. Ez jó, megfelelő, szerény - döntsétek el magatok!

Az évi statisztikai jelentés, ami egyfajta összegzése a munkánknak, megtalálható az évkönyvben. A létszámunk szinte változatlan, a Válaszói Névjegyzéken 240 fő szerepel.

Új kezdeményezésünk a magyar nyelvi tanfolyam, azok számára aki tanulni, vagy gyakorolni kivánják eleik nyelvét. Csoportjaink nem tul népesek, de akik jönnek, igen keményen tanulnak és valóban szeretnének előrehaladni.

Az elmúlt évben is számos programot és akciót támogattunk, nevezetesen: élelmiszer gyűjtést, gyermekek számára ruhák gyűjtését valamint karácsonyi ajándékozást. Rendszeresen támogatjuk az Üdvhadsereg menhelyét, elküldtük adományainkat az ázsiai szökőár és a Katrina hurrikán áldozatainak. Öröm volt hallgatni a Perth Amboy-i Gimnázium kórusának énekét és átadni támogatásunkat a kórusversenyen való részvétel segitésére.

Elküdtük adományainkat a ligonieri Bethlen Otthon javára is, ahol részt vettünk az új épület átadási ünnepségén.

Októberben átadtuk a Debreceni Református Kollégiumnak, örökös letétként, gyülekezetünk tulajdonjogát fenntartva, Kossuth Lajos 1874-ben, fiához irt levelét. A Kollégium rendelkezik a legnagyobb Kossuth gyűjteménnyel, ugy gondoltuk ez a legméltóbb hely ahol megőrizhetik az értékes dokumentumot. A levelet már be is mutatták egy kiállitáson, mint a 2005. év legértékesebb darabja.

Úgy vélem, jó és hű sáfárai voltunk Urunknak. Ennek egyik jele a gyülekezet javára felajánlott adományok összege, ami 174,000.00 dollár volt, ebből 18,500.00 az eladott busz ára, 8,300.00 dollár pedig amit a Női Kör adományozott a konyha felújitására. Ez alkalommal és ezen a helyen is megköszönöm mindenki áldozatvállalását.

Hogyan fogadtunk vendégeinket, akik meglátogattak minket az elmúlt évben? Öröm számunkra annak ha vendégek érkeznek hozzánk. Helyet adtunk a Lelkészegyesület találkozóinak. Neves vendégek érkeztek hozzánk és szolgáltak közöttünk: Bertalan Imre a Bethlen Otthon Igazgatója, Ligonierből, Dr. Molnár Ágoston New Brunswickról, Lente Boglárka és Püski Dániel Debrecenből, akik Princetonban tanulnak ebben az évben. Túri Gábor Debrecen város alpolgármestere és Dr. G.Szabó Botond a Református Kollégium Gyűjteményeinek igazgatója.

Egy évre tekint vissza a Hanwoori koreai gyülekezettel való kapcsolatunk, akik a központi épületünk alsó szintjét használják. Egy fiatal gyülekezet, tele lelkesedéssel és odaszánással. Kapcsolataink elmélyitését szolgálta, hogy meghivtak bennünket az ázsiai újév ünnepre, mi pedig a nyári piknikünkön viszonoztuk azt. Reméljük, hogy együttműködésünk mindkét fél kölcsönös megelégedésére szolgál majd.

Eleget tettünk a meghivásoknak és részt vettünk testvérgyülekezeteink ünnepségein: New Brunswick és Manville 90. Passaic 110. évfordulóján. Ott voltunk a Fairfieldi Conn. gyülekezet Kálvin termének újjáalakitásának ünnepségén, csakúgy mint a Bethlen Otthon új épületének lélekemelő átadásán.

Miközben örvendeztünk és számba vettük a múlt emlékeit, szomorú napjaink is voltak amikor eljutott hozzánk a hir, Nt. Ollie Benko Hall elhunyt. Urunk adjon vigasztalást a gyászoló családnak és tegye emlékét áldottá.

Hálásan köszönöm mindenki szolgálatát, de külön köszönet a csoportok és szervezetek vezetőinek, akik fáradhatatlanul dolgoztak az év folyamán. Mindenki sokat munkálkodott, azonban Ernest Marczi, Andrew Lovasz, Laura Dinicola, Lillian Banyacski, Arlene Sabo és Hunyady Piroska fogadják elismerésünket a végzett munkáért. Feltétlenül meg kell emlitenünk és köszönetet mondanunk Judith Vincze Quinn testvérünknek, aki évek hosszú során felelős vezetője volt Vasárnapi Iskolánknak. Hála legyen Istennek, hogy mindazt átadta a fiatalabb nemzedéknek, amit áldott emlékezetű apjától tanult.

Végezetül azt mondhatom, hogy a 2005. esztendő is lehetőséget adott a szolgálatra, a segitésre, a támogatásra, a vendégek fogadására és az együttműködésre. Mindezekért legyen hála Urunknak és kérjük áldásait az előttünk lévő uj esztendőre is.
